New Uniform Utility Rates Proposed – Public Meeting Scheduled Aug. 25, 2015

You should have received a letter from the BOCC, Dept. of Water Resources, Citrus County Utilities about a proposed change to a flat county-wide water and sewer billing rate structure that will greatly reduce our monthly utility bill from them.  The text of the letter is below in color.  Attached is a table that shows how our current rates for water and sewer would change, and how it would affect your water and sewer bill.  For a low water user (just like me) the rate would change from $52.07 /month to $37.74 /month for 1000 gals or less of water use.  That is a savings of $14.33 /month.  Your overall cost and savings depend on how much water you normally use, but you will see even greater savings if you use over 1000 gallons to 20,000 gallons.  Only the biggest water hogs would see any increase in their water bill.  This is all detailed in the attachment.

BUT IT IS NOT A DONE DEAL, and may not happen unless we get your support in letting the BOCC and Citrus County Utilities that we demand they move forward with the change to a flat rate.  That is because the flat rate will also increase rates for some in the county, like citizens in Sugarmill Woods and many other parts of the county.  THERE WILL BE A LARGE OUTCRY TO NOT MAKE THE CHANGE FROM THOSE THAT NOW HAVE MUCH LOWER UTILITY RATES THAT WILL GO UP.  Our voice must be larger than theirs.

Below I have pasted the text from the letter I received, which should be the same as what you received.  NOTE THAT THERE IS A PUBLIC HEARING WHERE EVERYONE CAN EXPRESS THEIR SUPPORT OR PUSH BACK ON  THE NEW FLAT RATE.  We need to load the room at this hearing with Chassahowitzkans that want their rate lowered so we all pay our equal fair share in Citrus.  All are encouraged to go.  We can meet at the Community Center at 1 pm on Tuesday, Aug. 25 to carpool to the public hearing.

New Exhibit Opens at the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum

Contact:           Tobey Phillips, Public Information Officer, 352-527-5484,  tobey.phillips@bocc.citrus.fl.us

The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum announces a reception to honor the opening of a new permanent exhibit in the Brannan Family Gallery, titled Changing People, Changing Springs: Chassahowitzka Discovered! This event will take place on Wednesday, July 2, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. with a $10 donation at the door.

Chassahowiztka Springs has been described as a time capsule of Florida history. Beginning with the Paleoindians, who arrived here some 10,000 years ago, to more recent tourists who arrived by steamship and train, people have left tantalizing clues about their sojourns at the Springs. Divers, with assistance from archeologists, have recovered everything from ancient wooden paddles, to Spanish pottery shards, to kerosene lamps and old Coke bottles. These artifacts and many more, will soon be on display at the Museum.

The springs, with their fresh water and abundant fish and game, have always been natural gathering places for people. The hundreds of artifacts recovered from their depths make up one of the largest collections to be displayed in Citrus County. Some of the really significant finds are a 10,000 year old Suwannee projectile point from the Paleoindian period, two wood paddles/oars (about 2,500 years old), a wood cypress fin effigy, an intact Pasco Plain bowl (AD 100–1500), a Spanish majolica plate (1600s), and Chattachoochee brushed pottery pieces (1700s).

Some of the artifacts from more recent times include soda and pharmacy bottles that are 150 years old! Amazingly, divers even brought up a very rare Ford battery sign from the 1930s. CNN reporter Tom Watkins described it this way: “The Springs cleanup yielded a cornucopia of history.”

The exhibit includes artifacts (rare and one of a kind), maps, photos, interpretive panels, and interactive areas, including a net-making table for children and a “Test Yourself” quiz game for all ages.

With the precarious state of Florida’s springs and aquifer today, and the increasing threat of saltwater encroachment along the coasts, the exhibit is especially timely.
